Wiesn time: How to get an accommodation in Munich

MĂĽnchen Oktoberfest Unterkunft Hotel

Finding suitable accommodation in Munich is not easy, especially not during the Oktoberfest season. Around 6.5 million guests came to the Wiesn in 2022, a large part of them from Munich and the surrounding area, but the rest need accommodation according to the motto “first come, first served”. Those who search for holiday apartments or hotel rooms too late will go away empty-handed or strain their wallets unnecessarily. But there are some cheap alternatives if one books early enough.

Hotel rooms and pensions

Room prices start at around 80 to 100 euros (e.g. for a guesthouse in the surrounding area), but these cheap offers are then gone in a flash every year. Likewise, exclusive luxury hotels are also quickly booked out, most often hotels in the middle range are found, which cost between 180 to 350 euros per room and night. If you arrive by plane, hotels directly at the airport are also a good option. From there, the S-Bahn will take you to the Oktoberfest. From the location of the hotel, rooms around the main station or directly at the Theresienwiese are a good choice. Ludwigs- and Isarvorstadt offer the optimal location for visiting the Wiesn.

We recommend the following districts for your visit:

Altstadt-Lehel: This is a good place for a little sightseeing with little time.

Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt: Ideal for combining sightseeing and celebrations with inexpensive accommodation near the train station.

Maxvorstadt: Ideal for art and culture lovers. The district is strategically located between the old town, the Olympic Park and Nymphenburg Palace.

Schwabing: Ideal for overnight stays in a relaxed atmosphere. Due to the proximity to the university, younger visitors characterize this district. Overall, there is a nice mixture of bars, restaurants and cafés here.

Au-Haidhausen: Ideal for quiet living among locals, away from the tourist hype.

Tip: Avoid the surrounding area and book as early as possible

If you would like to combine your Oktoberfest stay with a short holiday, Starnberg, which is located a little further out, is also a good option. There are several hotels, traditional guest houses and holiday flats in a quiet location with S-Bahn connection. Also other surrounding cities like Dachau, Olching, FĂĽrstenfeldbruck, Wolfratshausen, Unterhaching, Ebersberg, Erding or UnterschleiĂźheim are well connected to the Theresienwiese. The public transport system in Munich is very well developed, although it is very crowded during the Wiesn period. The first bookings for the Oktoberfest are made shortly after last year’s Wiesn or in January. Those who do not look until August will hardly find an affordable bed.

Youth hostels and hostels

If a hotel room is too expensive for you, you can also book a room in a youth hostel or hostel. They often offer beds in shared rooms, but also single rooms. To find a suitable hostel for accommodation, internet platforms such as “hostelworld.com” can be used to check room availability and compare prices.

Private accommodation and AirBnb

Just in time for the Oktoberfest, many Munich residents also offer private rooms or entire accommodations. But also in the surrounding area, bed and breakfasts, restaurants with guest rooms or the like invite the visitor in practically every village, no matter how small. These can often be found via ebay classifieds or AirBnB. This “living for a limited time” lets one dive completely into the magic of the Bavarian metropolis.

Pro tip: AirBnb also rents out fully furnished apartments and boutique hotel rooms with excellent ratings to business travellers.

Camping sites: With your own caravan to the Wiesn

Special parking spaces and camping sites with good connections to the Wiesn via public transport can be found in various districts around Munich. This also applies to the Wiesn-Camp in Riem. There, tents, living containers, caravans and lofts are available for rent. All guests have access to modern equipped sanitary facilities. WLAN, a cash dispenser and lockers are also available. The public transport can be reached at the nearby S-Bahn stop “Riem” of line S2. From the camp to the station it is about 5 minutes walk.
