The perfect Oktoberfest party 2020 & 2021 – how to get Wiesn flair at home

Oktoberfest party

This year is very different. Besides cancelled festivals and postponed concerts, the Munich Wiesn will unfortunately also be cancelled in 2020 & 2021. But that is no reason to be sad! Invite your friends and celebrate the Oktoberfest in your own four walls! With the following tips you can create a Bavarian flair – no matter where you live.

Bavarian decoration for a marquee atmosphere

The Bavarian state colors blue and white are indispensable for decoration. Napkins in the classic square pattern and beer mugs add Bavarian flair. Small felt elements or motifs such as hearts, pretzels, edelweiss, deer and roes go well with them. Gingerbread hearts with messages like “Spatzl” (bavarian expression for “sweety”) or “Servus” (bavarian expression for “hello”) can furthermore be used as perfect decoration.

If you have enough space, and the weather is good, you can set up a pavilion in the garden. It is often worthwhile to have a look at online advertisements or to contact local beverage markets, which lend beer bank sets and beer mugs at reasonable prices. For indoors or on the balcony, a small wooden seating set with matching square pattern tablecloth is also suitable.

These Bavarian specialties should not be missing

Part of every Wiesn are pretzels with “Obazda” and Bavarian veal sausage with sweet mustard (German: “Weißwurst mit sĂŒĂŸem Senf”). Also fresh bread, sausage, cheese, radishes and „Griebenschmalz“ are classics. Roast pork with bread dumplings (German: „Schweinebraten mit Semmelknödel“) or knuckle of pork with sauerkraut (German: „Schweinshaxen mit Sauerkraut“) make a perfect warm german dish.

“KĂ€sespĂ€tzle“ (almost like mac and cheese) are an excellent vegetarian alternative. For dessert, „Kaiserschmarrn“ (stewed pancakes with raisins) or „Reiberdatschi mit Apfelkompott“ (grated potato pancakes with apple sauce) can be served. For snacks, you can serve small bowls of salty snack pretzels.

Even though beer plays an important role at every Oktoberfest, you don’t have to miss out on that this year. The original Oktoberfest Maß already costs more than 10 Euros – that can be done a lot cheaper at home! For your motto party, you can choose a classic Augustiner Helles or another favorite beer of your choice.

Suitable music creates the right mood

Instead of dancing on beer benches in the classic Oktoberfest tents, you  will be dancing in the living room or in the garden this year. To set the right mood for that, you should create a playlist with absolute Wiesn classics like ” Marmor, Stein und Eisen bricht” by Drafi Deutscher, “So ein schöner Tag” by Donikkl, “Que sera, sera” by Doris Day, “Y.M.C.A.” by the Village People, “I sing a Liad fĂŒr di” by Andreas Gabalier or “ein Prosit der GemĂŒtlichkeit”. Also new Wiesn hits like “Cordula GrĂŒn” by Josh and “Ham kummst” by Seiler und Speer will bring anyone to the dancefloor! In our blog post “The best Oktoberfest songs to sing along” you will find an even bigger selection of songs to dance and sway.

Wiesn games bring entertainment

A simple party game that anyone can play at home is the so-called “Maßkrugstemmen”. The participants hold a filled beer mug in front of them with an outstretched arm – the one who puts the mug down first loses. Time is stopped by a referee, who also observes if everybody follows the rules and whose elbow bends or arm swings down.

In addition to the strenuous measure jug lifting, “Fingerhageln” (“finger fighting”) can also be played at the theme party. Two participants sit opposite each other, using their right index fingers and hooking them with the other’s. The aim is to literally pull the opponent over the table. This sounds easier than it is, but it is a lot of fun. However, it is advisable that a few friends hold the beer tables and benches to avoid beer and people of falling over.

Oktoberfest at home with the right outfit

Men dig up their leather pants, women can also reach for the practical leather pants or the traditional dirndl from last year. Those who do not have a traditional costume can go with checkered shirts, blouses and accessories with a Bavarian touch, such as traditional hats, vests or hair accessories. Beautiful romantic and playful braided hairstyles for women also look great.
